How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?

One of the most common questions we get at The Mane Studio is how long extensions last. The answer depends on the method, how well you care for them, and your maintenance schedule.

Hand-Tied Extensions

Hand-tied wefts need a move-up appointment every 6 to 8 weeks. During a move-up, your stylist repositions the rows as your natural hair grows out. The hair itself (the wefts) can last 9 to 12 months or longer with proper care before needing to be replaced.

K-Tip Extensions

K-Tip (keratin individual) bonds typically last 3 to 4 months before they need to be removed and reinstalled. The hair strands themselves can be reused for multiple installs if they're well maintained. Many clients get 2 to 3 installs from a single set.

What Affects Lifespan

  • Home care routine. Sulfate-free products, gentle brushing from ends up, and sleeping in a loose braid all make a difference.
  • Heat exposure. Excess heat near the roots or bonds can shorten the life of your extensions.
  • Hair type. Fine hair may need a lighter method. Thick or coarse hair may put more tension on bonds. Your stylist plans for this.
  • Consistent maintenance. Keeping your move-up schedule prevents matting, slipping, and damage to your natural hair.

The Bottom Line

With the right method, proper care, and a consistent maintenance schedule, extensions can be a long-term part of your routine. At The Mane Studio in Prosper, TX, we set you up with a realistic plan so you know exactly what to expect. See our full extension services.
